On This Day In Italian History…

On this day in 1128, Pope Honorius II grants a papal sanction to the military order known as the Knight’s Templar, declaring it to be God’s Army.  Pope Honorius II came from very humble beginnings before becoming the most powerful instrument of the Vatican.  Born Lamberto Scannabecchi in Fiagnano near present-day Imola, Italy, he attracted the attention of Pope Urban II after becoming the archdeacon of Bologna.  Soon after taking over power of the Vatican, Pope Honorius recognized the group of French guards that were protecting Crusaders on their passage to Jerusalem to fight.  The Knight’s Templar were born into nobility but took strict vows of poverty, did not own land and had strict rules on chastity and obedience.
